What Will Show Up on My Health Insurance Bill?

Question by Karma: What will show up on my health insurance bill?
I was taken to the ER for a heroin overdose. I’m 18 and still under my father’s insurance.
The nurses said it would only show up as an ER visit, but I’m worried it would say WHY I was there and that it would be listed as drug abuse/overdose as it was on my discharge papers. The discharge papers don’t say I was given Narcan (opioid specific) but I was, so would that show up on insurance or not? It also says I was given a urine drug test and urine pregnancy test and an EKG. Would those show on insurance bill and would my parents be able to see the results of the drug test or not with me being 18? If they did would it just be positive for drugs or would it say I was on heroin specifically?

My parents know I was in the hospital, but they think I fainted and went unconscious or something of the sort. It would break their hearts to find out the true cause, so if it can be avoided by any means possible I will try. Help?

It depends on whether your father asks for an EOB (explanation of benefits). His insurance company will get that since it completely lists everything, line by line, that was used and done. A lot of insurance companies make contact with the policy holder to find out if ongoing evaluation is needed. Best thing to do is come clean to your parents. Yes, he will be hurt, but you can create a level of integrity that you don’t have now with him. Also, by being honest, you both will have a chance to have them on your side as you work things out.
