Remembering Big Jim Sullivan, Jerome Horwitz, Frank Wilson – AZT, FORBIDDEN ZONES, AND A NORTHERN SOUL CLASSIC Based on the genetics revolution and the discovery of the DNA double helix, Jerome Horwitz created AZT in the 1960’s, hoping it would be an effective anticancer drug. The drug was shelved but was reintroduced serendipitously in the 1980’s and became the first antiretroviral drug against the HIV virus. Unknown to most of the record buying public, Big Jim Sullivan was Great Britain’s top session guitarist for five decades. Frank Wilson was an unheralded Motown performer, writer, and producer. One of his records became a cult classic in England and he penned several of the top hits for The Supremes, along with the classic You’ve Made Me So Very Happy. Jerome Phillip Horwitz (January 16, 1919 — September 6, 2012)[1][2] was a globally renowned American scientist; his affiliations included the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Michigan Cancer Foundation. Dr. Horwitz was a Detroit native and 1937 graduate of Central High School.[3] Horwitz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Detroit; his doctorate in chemistry came from the University of Michigan. Dr. Jerome P. Horwitz completed his post-doctoral training at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan.[4] In 1964, while conducting research for the Karmanos Institute, Dr. Horwitz synthesized a compound that was to become known as zidovudine (AZT) – an antiviral drug
