I’m going to be honest, I am a 25 year old gay male who has been around the block sexually. To the point I am going to get counseling for sex addiction. I was hooking up with way to many random people having unprotected sex. I didn’t get tested for over a year. I was too scared to find out the result. I am also a gay, black male- one of the highest groups for HIV infections- and I live in NYC, which is has ever increasing rates of infection. I was 100% sure I was positive. I decided to get the Oraquick test to at least prepare myself before I into my doctor and have him say the words “you are HIV positive”
I was so distressed I went out today during my lunch break and got the test at CVS. I followed the directions, and after 20 minutes checked them. I was certain I would see 2 lines which meant positive. However, there is one line, signaling a negative result! I was so happy I cried, but skeptical based on my sexual past. I even checked the test tube 5 times after a few minutes to see if there wasn’t a delay in the positive result coming up. How accurate are the result of this test- as far as negatives go? When I swabbed my gums, a little blood was on the test stick so that was TWO body fluids to go by. I see this as a second chance- a new lease on life, and a signal to get help before my luck runs out. But I don’t want to get my hopes up if it is not accurate.
Please serious answers only, and no jerks- this was kind of traumatizing for me despite to negative result.

These are tests are extremely accurate and are conclusive of your status. I assure your test is in good standing since these oraquicks recently hit the market.
A little known fact HIV is rather difficult to contract, many people never contract it.

It sounds like you are a VERY lucky guy! Congratulations! I think it’s time to really start appreciating the life you have, and am proud you are making changes and getting the help you need 🙂 thats great to hear!
The test you did is very accurate. Thats what they use at testing centers that the government provides money for! They’re gonna make sure its reliable so people don’t have to keep going in for more tests and using more government funded money.
I do have to say though, if you have had unprotected sex in the past 3 months, you’re going to want to keep testing. Most people will show positive after 25 days post-exposure, but sometimes it takes up to 3 months to create enough anti-bodies for it to show on a test. If I were you, just to be on the safe side, get tested regularly for everything, every 3 months for a year… this will not only make sure you are clean, but give you a huge peace of mind… going through stuff like this is scary and you are making a change in your life to go down a right path… you deserve that kind of reassurance.
